Chairperson Scott called the meeting to order and declared that there was a quorum at 1:30 p.m. She welcomed everyone to the first meeting of the 2001-2002 University Senate.

REPORT OF THE SECRETARY: Agenda: The agenda was approved as distributed. Communications: Secretary Swalagin reminded 2001-02 Senators to complete a committee preference form and return it to the Senate office. He said that continuing Senators’ current committee assignments will be continued unless they request another committee. He also invited those Senators interested in co-chairing a standing committee to let him know before the end of May, when committee assignments will be finalized by the Executive Committee.

PRIVILEGE OF THE FLOOR:  Privilege of the floor was granted to Nominating Committee Chairperson Harry Janes, a member of the 2000-01 Senate.

REPORT OF THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE:  Nominating Committee Chairperson Harry Janes presented the report of the Nominating Committee.

Senator Janes gave an overview of the nominating and election process. He noted that candidates for positions which are uncontested will not be required to make statements in support of their candidacies, but may do so if they wish.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Chairperson (who serves ex officio as Representative to the Board of Governors): Kathleen Scott, Rutgers College, Faculty. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Chairperson.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Vice Chairperson: Samuel Rabinowitz, School of Business-Camden, Faculty. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Vice Chairperson.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, for four positions to the office of Faculty Member of the Executive Committee: Joseph Barone, Pharmacy; Natalie Borisovets, Libraries-Newark; Roger Cowley, At-Large Camden; Haym Hirsh, Rutgers College; Asela Laguna-Diaz, At-Large Newark; Paul Leath, Rutgers College; and Paul Panayotatos, At-Large New Brunswick. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Faculty Member of the Executive Committee.

Senators Barone, Borisovets, Cowley, Hirsh, Leath, and Panayotatos made statements in support of their candidacies. Senator Diner made a statement in support of the candidacy of Senator Laguna-Diaz, who was not present at the meeting.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, for two positions to the office of Student Member of the Executive Committee: Liza Saniefard, Rutgers College; and Latesha Sims, Rutgers College. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. Senator Michael Dimond was nominated from the floor for the position of Student Member of the Executive Committee.

Senators Saniefard, Sims, and Dimond made statements in support of their candidacies.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, for one position to the office of Alumnus Member of the Executive Committee: Robert Kenney, Alumni Federation; and Bert Manhoff, Alumni Federation. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Alumnus Senator Member of the Executive Committee.

Senator Manhoff made a statement in support of his candidacy. Senator Janes read a prepared statement from Senator Kenny, who was unable to attend the meeting.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Faculty Representative to the Board of Governors: Arlene Walker-Andrews, At-Large New Brunswick. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Faculty Representative to the Board of Governors.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Student Representative to the Board of Governors: Ken Esser, Livingston College; Avram Fechter, Rutgers College; and Jason Miller, Cook College. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Student Representative to the Board of Governors.

Senators Esser, Fechter, and Miller made statements in support of their candidacies.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, for two positions to the office of Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees: Michael Rohr, Newark College of Arts and Sciences; and Mark Vodak, Cook College. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Graduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees: Jason Redd, Graduate School-NB. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Graduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees.

Senator Janes placed in nomination for the Nominating Committee, to the office of Undergraduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees: Kim Wozniak, Rutgers College. Senator Janes asked for nominations from the floor. There were no nominations from the floor for the position of Undergraduate Student Representative to the Board of Trustees.

VOTING AND COLLECTION OF BALLOTS:  Voting was done on paper ballots prepared by the Secretary and distributed at sign-in only to voting members of the 2001-02 Senate. Linda Mickelsen of the Senate Office supervised the collection of the ballots.

RECESS AND COUNTING OF VOTES:  Chairperson Scott declared the meeting in recess during tabulation of the votes. Mrs. Mickelsen of the Senate Office supervised tabulation of the ballots. The Regular Meeting of the 2000-2001 Senate took place during the recess. Chairperson Scott reconvened the Organizational Meeting of the 2001-02 Senate at 4:20 p.m.

REPORT OF ELECTION RESULTS:  Nominating Committee Chairperson Harry Janes announced the following results of the election of 2001-02 officers, Executive Committee members, and Representatives to the Boards of Governors and Trustees:

VICE CHAIRPERSON:  Samuel Rabinowitz, School of Business-Camden, Faculty

ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business before the 2001-02 University Senate, the meeting was adjourned by Chairperson Scott at 4:22 p.m.
