President Barchi's Comments on University Senate
Excerpted from his Administrative Report to the September 2012 Senate

"First of all I've been a faculty member for 40+ years and throughout that time one of my primary foci has been on this concept of a community of scholars and how important that is to a university and how central that community is to what makes a great university great.  That community includes not just the faculty but the students, the staff, namely everybody who’s a part of that family and an essential part of that community of scholars is this concept of shared governance and that’s what you’re doing here, that’s why I’m here, that’s why you’re here. Believe me I have a tremendous respect for the amount of time it takes for the senators to do what they do, what they have done in past years and what you’re going to be doing in the future.  I will give my best to be attentive to what you bring forward. I learned today that there are more than a few recommendations and white papers on the desk of some president somewhere.  I don’t know what desk they’re on, they’re not on my desk, but I will look for the desk that has them and do my best to catch up with the backlog and see what we can do about that.  Don’t underestimate the power of this body. In some cases it may be advisory and in some cases there may be constitutional aspects that are there, and as you know it’s not the size of the dog that matters, although this is one big dog; it’s the power of the bite and the impact that you’ve had over the past six months in changing directions down in Camden, in helping the community there to get its voice heard, basically turning legislation around. That’s pretty powerful turning legislation around to something that what we have now is diametrically opposite to where we started. I can’t overemphasize how different it is and you deserve a lot of credit for that and I want to make sure the credit is there."
