TEXT OF JANUARY 16, 2008 LETTER FROM PRESIDENT McCORMICK TO THE UNIVERSITY SENATE
IN RESPONSE TO THE SENATE'S DECEMBER 2007 RECOMMENDATIONS ON CHARGE S-0607, SALE OF EXAMINATION AND DESK COPIES OF TEXTBOOKS:

I am writing in regard to the Instruction, Curricula, and Advising Committee's Response to S-0607: Sale of Examination and Desk Copies of Textbooks, as adopted by the University Senate on December 7, 2007.

The Senate has my administration's strong agreement that such books should not be offered for resale, and we will act on the recommendation to inform our faculty of relevant sections of our university's solicitation policy as they apply to resellers. We applaud the idea of donating books to charitable organizations as a positive option for faculty to consider. For logistical and other reasons, however, my administration does not intend to organize regular pickup and storage of texts for this purpose.

My thanks to the members of the Instruction Curricula, and Advising Committee for their thoughtful work and recommendations.

Sincerely yours,

Richard L. McCormick
