TEXT OF EMAILS ON SPRING BREAK AND SATURDAY/SUNDAY CLASSES:

Below is the action being proposed on my campus for dealing with a loophole in the academic calendar re: spring break. I think we should propose a charge to ASRAC to modify the calendar to deal with this so that we do not lose two Saturdays (and Sundays-if any classes are scheduled) to spring break. Please add it to the agenda for Friday’s meeting.

I have recently had some discussions concerning when Spring Break will begin and end concerning classes – specifically Saturday classes.  It has been my assumption that Spring Break is designed to affect “1 class week” – for classes that meet twice-a-week that means both meetings and for classes that meet once-a-week that means one meeting.  That being the case, I believe on the Camden campus, Spring Break will commence on Monday, March 16 and continue through Sunday, March 22.  This means that classes will meet on Saturday, March 14 and Sunday, March 15, but will not meet on Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22.  This will ensure that only one Saturday class (March 21) and one Sunday class (March 22) is affected by Spring Break.
 
If you agree with the above, please have your affected faculty notified to enable them to properly prepare their Spring 2009 syllabus.  If you disagree, please come to some consensus with the other Deans.  It is important that we have a consistent determination across campus so that we can send a consistent message to support services (custodial and security).
 
The above only pertains to classes.  Dave Gwalthney will have to address the status of the student computing labs and Gary Golden will have to address the status of Robeson Library on Saturday and Sunday March 14 and 15 and Saturday and Sunday March 21 and 22.
