Dear Members of the Rutgers Community:
Today, the Rutgers University Board of Governors voted to merge the
Graduate
School–New Brunswick (GSNB) and the Graduate School of Biomedical
Sciences (GSBS),
effective July 1. The schools, housed at Rutgers–New Brunswick
and Rutgers
Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), respectively, are among the
leading graduate
schools in our country and will now join forces to become the School of
Graduate
Studies, an initiative first conceived as part of the 2013 integration
between
Rutgers and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
The new School of Graduate Studies will serve about 5,100 students and
will include
63 doctoral programs and 75 master’s degree programs in
humanities, social sciences,
physical sciences, mathematical sciences, biological and medical
sciences and
engineering. This new school will bring together what is separately
remarkable about
our institutions to create a truly comprehensive graduate school that
rivals the
best in the Big Ten and AAU.
Jerome Kukor, currently the dean of the GSNB, will lead the new school;
Kathleen
Scotto, the dean of GSBS, will become vice dean. We would like to
commend Deans
Kukor and Scotto for working tirelessly on this merger since the early
days of the
integration between Rutgers and the former University of Medicine and
Dentistry of
New Jersey. The new school will be affiliated with both
Rutgers–New Brunswick and
RBHS and will report to Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
Barbara Lee.
The strength of our institutions is the breadth of expertise and
research that
proliferate from our labs and classrooms. Our combined efforts will now
generate
numerous opportunities that bring together our best minds to tackle the
world’s
biggest challenges and position Rutgers to be the vanguard of graduate
education. We
believe we are better together and are excited by the new opportunities
that lie
ahead.
