EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MINUTES
October 5, 2001

The regular meeting of the University Senate Executive Committee was held on Friday, October 5, 2001 at 1:10 p.m. in the President’s Dining Room, Brower Commons, College Avenue Campus, the Chair and Secretary being present.

1. Chairperson’s Report
Chairperson Scott called the meeting to order.  Her brief comments included thanking President Lawrence for the new tuition-scholarship program to benefit families of victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

3. Administrative Report
President Lawrence presented the administrative report, which included comments on: the new tuition-scholarship program for families of victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks; in consideration of the September 11 terrorist attacks, cancellation of a celebration and reception, scheduled for October 27, for donors upon the Capital Campaign reaching its halfway mark; as well as thanks for responses, and further comments, on the "capacity" issue and proposals presented during the State of the University Address.

Caps Advisory Committee Interim Report, and Revised Draft CAPS Proposal: Ray Caprio and James Miller, Co-chairs of the CAPS Advisory Committee, presented their committee’s October 2001 Interim Report and Revised Draft CAPS Proposal. Chairperson Scott complimented the high quality of the report and revisions to the proposal. The Executive Committee docketed for the October 2001 Senate meeting an open-forum discussion on CAPS, and considered details and logistics of that discussion.  Chairperson Scott will draft a separate e-mail on this open-forum for Secretary Swalagin to forward to the Senate as an adjunct to the meeting notice.  All members of the CAPS Advisory Committee will be invited to attend the meeting and respond to comments or questions from the Senate.

The committee discussed a September 2001 e-mail exchange between Barbara Bender, Graduate School-NB and Ken Iuso, University Registrar, which had been forwarded to Chairperson Scott, regarding the add/drop period. [http://senate.rutgers.edu/bender.html]   The e-mail asks that the recent changes to the add/drop period be revised in light of complaints from graduate students.  An existing draft charge to the Academic Standards, Regulations and Admissions Committee on review of the drop/add period will be revised to include this element, and will be issued.  The charge will request a report to the Executive Committee by March 2002.
