I am establishing a new committee, the Ad Hoc Committee on Student ID, to address the issues surrounding the extraneous use of social security numbers as student identification here at the University, and I would like you to chair this committee.  the committee will be charged to provide information and advice on the current, university-wide "public" uses of social security numbers as identification for students, as well as develop possible alternatives for identification for these activities.  Your experience and knowledge of the related issues make you the perfect choice to lead this committee, and I appreciate your willingness to take on this responsibility.  for your information, I have enclosed a copy of the committee's charge and a list of its members.
