Text of February 19, 2004 letter to Senate from President McCormick acknowledging the Statement and Resolution in Opposition to Proposed and Continued Budget Cuts, and in Support of Excellence in Higher Education in New Jersey:

I am pleased to accept the Statement and Resolution in Opposition to Proposed and Continued Budget Cuts, and in Support of Excellence in Higher Education in New Jersey as approved by the University Senate on February 21, 2003.

As you know, the administration launched a vigorous campaign to restore state funding, supported with enthusiasm by students, faculty, alumni, staff, and friends of the university. The Senate’s thoughtful resolution and statement strengthened and complemented the administration’s effort. The fact that the state budget signed into law in June 2003 restored half of the original cut is a testament to the unified effort of so many people in the Rutgers community.

As we approach a new budget cycle, I will count on the Senate to continue its strong advocacy for adequate and improved state funding to support the essential teaching, research, and service that are the mission of this university.

Sincerely yours,

Richard L. McCormick
