TEXT OF PRESIDENT McCORMICK'S SEPTEMBER 18, 2008 RESPONSE TO THE REPORT AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON CHARGE S-0701, CONTINGENT FACULTY ROLE IN SHARED GOVERNANCE:

I am writing in response to the Report and Recommendations on Charge
S-0701 on Contingent Faculty Role in Shared Governance, as adopted by the University Senate on March 28, 2008. The members of the University Structure and Governance Committee have my appreciation for their attention to this issue.

My administration is pleased to accept the Senate's report and recommendation to modify Senate membership to include more contingent faculty. A revision of the language in University Regulations 50.2.1.C(1) and 50.2.1.A(1) will be proposed to the Board of Governors at an appropriate time. We believe that representation and the granting of voting rights to contingent faculty at the department or school level is a decision that must be made by the governance structure of those units.

Sincerely yours,

Richard L. McCormick
