TEXT OF PRESIDENT McCORMICK'S April 14, 2006 RESPONSE TO SENATE  RESOLUTION ON SUPPORT FOR CHAIR OF THE UNIVERSITY SENATE:

I am writing in response to the University Senate’s Resolution on Support for the Chair of the University Senate, which was approved at its September 30, 2005 meeting.

My administration accepts the recommendation with one emendation, that course relief provided for service as chair of the Senate must be subject to approval of the Chair and Dean of the incumbent’s department and school, respectively.  This qualification should be included to prevent an undue burden on a department that for reasons of size or specialization could not effectively meet its responsibilities to its educational and scholarly missions without the services of the individual in question.  With this, we concur that the recommendation will encourage participation of our faculty in the leadership of the Senate and will strengthen this institution within the university community.

The members of the University Structure and Governance Committee have my thanks for their efforts on this resolution.

Sincerely yours,
Richard L. McCormick
