Text of September 2, 2004 E-mail from Linda Schulze regarding Senate consideration of Academic Calendar Commencement Date Changes:

I am writing in response to your email about our request to change the commencement dates on the academic calendar.  As you know, in 2004 President McCormick moved commencement from the RAC to the Voorhees Mall on the College Avenue campus. At the same time, the President called together a committee to review University commencement and make recommendations on how to reconfigure commencement to make it a more meaningful and attractive event. Based on the success of this year's ceremony, the committee has recommended to the President that the commencement continue to be held on Voorhees Mall but suggested that it be moved a day ahead so that it does not interfere with the long-established Rutgers College commencement. Scheduling University commencement on the Wednesday rather than Thursday would also alleviate some of the traffic and other major logistical problems that resulted from this move to College Avenue. In addition, holding commencement on the Wednesday would permit us to have a reliable back-up space in case of rain without concern about displacing or inconveniencing  any scheduled convocations.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this or would like more information.

Best,

Linda Schulze
