Transmitting to the Senate the Final Draft of a Proposed New Academic Integrity Policy for Rutgers
The members of the Ad-Hoc Academic Integrity Committee have
submitted to me their final draft of a proposed new Academic Integrity
Policy for the University. I have accepted this draft from the
committee and herewith submit it the University Senate for its
approval. I would like to note the extraordinary efforts of the Ad Hoc
Committee, and particularly its chair, Martha Cotter, in developing
this proposed policy. The Committee engaged constituencies from
throughout the
university community, on all campuses and at all levels, in this
process. A key element in their deliberations was the education of
committee members and others in the intricacies of current issues
relating to academic integrity, including a comprehensive analysis of
how these issues have been articulated and handled by peer
institutions. The result is a thoughtful, rigorous, clear and practical
policy, that places a great emphasis on teaching our students and
holding them
responsible for the basic tenets of academic integrity in a manner
befitting our institutional status and mission. We owe an enormous debt
of gratitude to Martha and her colleagues for all their hard work on
the university's behalf in this regard. I look forward to the Senate's
discussion of the proposed policy and its eventual adoption. Thank
you.
