THOUGHTS ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CHARGE, AND REVIEW AND CONSIDERATION OF OTHER CHARGES RELATED TO INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND REUNIFICATION OF MEDICAL SCHOOL
From Paul Panayotatos, Senate Chair, January 2011

I agree that we have to discuss where this charge goes. I still think B&P because by the time FPAC gets to this we would need to consider the compatibility with RWJ. In other words, are the IT systems in the two institutions compatible? This would be a charge for Budget and Finance. We actually need to rethink many of our pending charges and issue new ones with respect to the proposed reunification of  RU and RWJ. Here are some more thoughts:

  1. What would shared governance look with the influx of faculty, students, administrators, staff and alumni from RWJ? If we retained the current representation formulas how would that affect the size of the senate?
  2. What are the issues of academic freedom that might need to be revisited? How will the tenure and promotion standards be unified? Do we need to amend form 1a? How about clinical faculty? Are the rules for clinical faculty that exist at RU adequate for a medical school environment?
  3. How does the MD degree fit with our other professional degrees?
  4. What are the standards of admission for both undergraduate and graduate/professional programs at RWJ? The senate is supposed to set these standards at RU.
  5. How are issues such as registration, add-drop, advising, the academic calendar etc. being handled now at RWJ and what would be needed to bring everything together?
Here are some charges considered back when we were looking at the Vagelos plan:
  1. Review the effects of a possible merger on integrated system-wide units such as Libraries and Computing. Possible areas of focus might be: resources; the effect on instruction; and the effect on research.
  2. Review the effects of a possible merger on non-biomedical programs.
  3. Identify what conditions would need to be met for the addition of a medical school to positively impact the current Rutgers educational mission in terms of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum; advising; and undergraduate and graduate research.
  4. Identify what areas would need to be addressed in order to completely integrate the interinstitutional graduate and undergraduate programs that are currently partially integrated. Consider the implications for full-scale integration.
