Text of September 23, 2004 letter to Professor Martha Cotter, Chair, University Senate from Albert R. Gamper, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Governors and Dr. Robert A. Laudicina, Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Dear Professor Cotter:

We are writing to you as the Chairman of the Board of Governors and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. We recently received a letter from David Abaskharon, President of the Newark College of Arts and Sciences-Student Government Association. In his letter, Mr. Abaskharon questions the lack of Newark student representation on the Board of Governors and the Board of Trustees.

It is our understanding that the student representatives to both governing boards are selected by the University Senate. Therefore, we would like to request that you give serious consideration to alternating student representation on the Boards among the three campuses, Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway, and Camden.

While we understand that the majority of students attend campus in New Brusnwick/Piscataway, we certainly do not want to overlook the contributions of student leaders from Newark and Camden. If alternating campus representation every year seems unbalanced, then perhaps the following rotation could be considered:

Year one – New Brunswick/Piscataway
Year two – Newark
Year three – New Brunswick/Piscataway
Year four – Camden
Year five – New Brunswick/Piscataway

We would be happy to discuss our suggestion with you and ask that you coordinate any communication to us through the Office of the Secretary in care of Leslie Fehrenbach. Mrs. Fehrenbach can be reached at 732/932-1352 or at Fehrenbach@oldqueens.rutgers.edu
