University Senate
Revitalization Committee and
Committee on University Governance, and Role,
Composition and Function of the Senate
Recommendations of Joint Committee, March 21, 2000
Submitted by Kathleen Scott, Senate and Governance Committee
Chairperson
The Senate Revitalization Committee and the Governance
Committee met jointly to review the charges to the Revitalization Committee
and evaluate the progress of the committee. The members agreed that they
had addressed all of the charges, at least in part. Nevertheless, the Committees
identified three areas that still need consideration:
-
Increasing the involvement of faculty in the Senate, especially
with respect to the composition and manner of election of faculty senators;
-
Refining the relationships between the Senate, the University's
governing boards, its constituencies and the University administration;
and,
-
How to get important issues onto the Senate's agenda.
Although the Committee recognizes that these are ongoing
issues, they feel that they should be the subject of a focused examination
by a Senate Committee. The members felt that these issues could most judiciously
be considered by a combination of the Revitalization and Governance committees.
Therefore, the committees recommend that:
-
the ad hoc Revitalization Committee be disbanded, and the
members of that committee invited to serve on the Governance Committee
through 2001; and that
-
the Executive Committee formally charge the Governance Committee
with further examination of the specific areas listed above.
