Beta Project I: Grade Replacement Proposal

Dear Mr. Swalagin,

My name is LaToya Roberts, currently a student of Rutgers. I am writing you this letter with respect to a proposal regarding the current Grade Replacement Policy here at Rutgers University.

As it stands, the policy for grade replacement is as follows: an F grade (and in some cases a D grade) must be redone for credit of the course. However, a C grade, if willingly chosen to be redone by a student will not receive credit. In other words, you must first fail the course in order to repeat it and receive any form of credit. In addition, the “new” grade is calculated by averaging the previous “old” grade with the current, which is factored into calculation of the students current GPA.

With continuous and ongoing research it has been discovered that universities such as Princeton University, MIT, University of Alabama, St. Francis College of Brooklyn New York and a host of others have implemented a grade replacement policy that includes complete replacement of grades C, D and F for credit without any averaging of previous grades in calculating a students GPA for the semester. In some instances at certain universities, a previous grade is even completely removed from the students’ transcript upon redoing the course successfully. As a direct result the aforementioned policy, these schools have higher statistics for their average GPA’s and are then rated as some of the best and prestigious universities in the country.

Mr. Swalagin, this policy has tremendous significance for all medical school applicants. Rutgers students are ultimately placed at a serious disadvantage in comparison to such universities in competing for a limited number of application spaces offered per year by medical schools and other facilities.

Therefore, it is with great passion and concern that I ask you to consider this proposal on behalf of all Rutgers students. I hope to meet with you soon along with other members of this organization for further discussion and your personal advice in pursuit of this project. I thank you very much for your time and appreciate all your effort regarding this matter.

Respectfully,
LaToya Roberts
